Foster Information

Fosters are always our biggest need! As a fully foster-based rescue (we do not have a facility!), we can only take dogs in if we have an open foster home for them. There is a need for fosters for dogs of all ages and sizes.

We get asked a lot what fostering entails, so this page addresses the basic questions. Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions not covered on this page. enlightenedThe Foster Application link is located at the bottom of this page.

heart We want to thank you for considering fostering with us! Foster homes are so important for each and every one of these pups, it gives them a chance to show who they are in a home setting. Many of our pups come from the shelter, where they are often stressed and unable to really thrive, as they are overwhelmed by their surroundings.

Foster Home Requirements

Hunter's Village Rescue has the following requirements to become a foster with our rescue:

  • Fosters must be 19+ years of age
  • All animals in the home must be up to date on vaccines and spayed/neutered
  • Must reside in Orlando/Central Florida area and be willing to transport locally (i.e., pickup, vet appointment)
  • If adopter does not own their home, landlord approval must be obtained
  • We do not require a fenced backyard, but just ask that you're willing to take your foster on regular walks as needed

In addition, the foster application process involves a brief home check. Since our fosters get first right of adoption, our foster approval process covers many of the steps of an adoption application! And yes - if you decide you absolutely cannot live without your foster, you have the option to adopt. smiley

Foster Basics

The rescue covers medical costs and provides all supplies for your foster dog. This includes supplies such as dog food, treats, food bowl, collar and leash, toys, crate, dog bed, etc. We will arrange the medical appointments and work with you to try and arrange a day and time that works (for most dogs this is just 1-2 appointments, for vaccines and spay/neuter). Our vet partners will work with our team for vetting costs, you never have to pay anything!

Our Foster Coordinator is dedicated to our team of Fosters and works to place a pup with you that matches your needs and lifestyle. We use our private FaceBook group to post dogs that need a foster home, and in some cases we may reach out to see if you're interested in a particular dog that we think is a good fit. You are never obligated to take a dog, it is completely up to you if you feel it's a good fit and you'd like to foster.

Once an application has reached the final steps, we arrange a Meet & Greet with the potential adopters. Our Adoption Coordinator will reach out and work with you on setting this up.

We do ask to allow slow introductions to other animals in your home, as some pups can be timid at first. We encourage fosters (and adopters) to follow the 3 day - 3 week - 3 month rule (see graphic below), which provides guidance on how a pup will decompress and how to work with them in the initial days. We always encourage upkeep of crate training, as this creates a safe space for pups, and is a very desirable trait for adoption.
