Surrendering a Dog

Surrendering a dog is a difficult decision, and we encourage you to exhaust all options before going this route.

We are seeing an unprecedented amount of owner surrenders this year, and we want to encourage and empower owners to do everything they can to keep their pets with them. Please view our Before Surrendering page on resources to consider before surrendering your dog. Note: If you have found a stray dog, please see our page on Lost/Found Pet Guidance.

If you have exhausted all options and still feel surrender is your best option, please see the county resources listed at the bottom of this page   Unfortunately, due to a lack of available fosters, HVR is on an intake hold at this time and we are unable to accept new surrender requests.

Surrender Process

Note that we are a small, foster-based rescue - this means we do not have a shelter or kennel - and we generally are not equipped to handle urgent situations, as we need time to secure a foster. Our ability to help is wholly dependent on a foster being available to assist. At times we do have a wait list for dogs coming into rescue. You should expect a minimum of 1-2 weeks before you hear back on your surrender request. If you submit a request and no longer need assistance, please let us know ASAP so we can ensure we are not holding a foster home unnecessarily.

We do not require a fee to be paid to surrender a dog, unless you are unable to provide basic supplies with the dog (leash, collar, toy/bed to help with the transition to a foster home). In the case you cannot provide this, we ask for a donation of $25 to offset the cost of these supplies.

When we are able to assist, you will be asked to transport your dog to our location. In some cases, we may need to arrange a temperament test prior to committing to taking the dog into rescue. Once intake is complete, your dog will be placed in a loving foster home, and we will ensure all medical care is attended to. We fully vet any applicants for adoption, and work to ensure the dog goes into a loving forever home. Unfortunately we do not facilitate "open adoptions" for dogs; all adoptions are closed adoptions.
